American Pie 2
Movie Review
By Suzie of tantra.com

Tantra is showing up in the most amazing places! We find Finch, one of the twenty-something’s in American Pie 2, studying Tantric

techniques throughout the movie. And, it’s a very funny movie.  Finch, one of the college men, spends his summer studying and practicing Tantra.  He’s preparing himself for his future, which happens to include one of his friend’s mothers, the woman who turned him on to Tantra in the first place. Ah, Shakti!

Finch, our character, thrives on discipline. A self- described sophisticate and self-promoting ladies’ man, as played by Eddie Kaye Thomas, he’s studying the principles of Tantric sex. "His dream is to be reunited with Stifler’s Mom as a master of sexual discipline, so he’s studying eastern philosophy – saving his energies, as it were," says Thomas. "He’s what you might call an extremely focused human being."

Quote Thomas: "There’s a party at Stifler’s house and Finch sneaks into her room just so he can smell her smells and see her surroundings. He finds a book on a thing called Tantra, which he’s already into that way of thinking, and it just opens up a really big door with a lot of new things inside."

Finch is reading a secret Tantric manual throughout the movie. We happen to know which book he’s carrying around with him and studying! He’s a prolific author, who has contributed a great volume of works to the subjects of Sacred Sexuality and Tantra, Kenneth Ray Stubbs, Phd. Ken's latest book is The Essential Tantra:  A Modern Guide to Sacred Sexuality, published by Tarcher/Putnam.

If you haven’t seen the movie American Pie 2, do!

Theatre Tantra
I
t happened in St. Petersburg, Russia, when Swami Nostradamus Virato stopped doing Tantra  workshops! Working with one of Russia leading stage directors, Virato has created a form of performance art for prospective actors who wish to experience Tantra. He has taken his events from the group room to the streets of cities.

Virato has been joined by Dhiraja, a young shaman from Tajikistan, who recently came from  Russia. Dhiraja and Virato fell in love (rose in love) in October of 2000 and have been presenting Theatre Tantra in Russia's two major cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg. Look for them in America soon!

Swami Virato In Russia
It seems Virato is as much in Russia these days than he is in America. The picture to the right was taken in October 1999. The woman is the former Juliet, now Ma Prem Agni, one of Virato's sannyasins (disciples). Swamiji also went to Moscow and St. Petersburg in February and March 2000, and again in October and November. He spent from June 19 to September 18, 2001 traveling in St. Petersburg and Moscow presenting Theatre Tantra. Maintaining the Rajneesh
lineage, Virato loves

Doctor Stumbles Onto Orgasm Machine
By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent

Washington, DC, Feb 7 (Reuters) - All he was trying to do was ease her  chronic back pain, but when Dr. Stuart Meloy placed an electrode into one patient's back, she groaned. Not in pain, but in delight. "This is a direct quote -- she said, "You're going to have to teach my husband how to do that',''
Meloy, an anesthesiologist and pain specialist in Winston- Salem, North Carolina, said in a telephone interview.

Meloy had stumbled onto an unexpected side-effect of the pain device he was using -- an ability to cause orgasm.

He has just patented this unexpected use of the device, a spinal cord stimulator made by device company Medtronic (NYSE:MDT - news). Now he is trying to talk Minneapolis-based Medtronic into testing and marketing the device for this use.

It all started with a relatively routine operation for Meloy, who was trying to help a patient with severe and untreatable back pain.

``She had had a number of back surgeries for degenerative disk disease and fusion surgery,'' Meloy said.

He was trying Medtronic's spinal cord stimulator to see if it might work in her case. ``These people are either suffering a lot or there is certainly a place for narcotics to be used.''

The surgeon has to place an electrode very precisely in the patient's spine. The idea is to find the specific nerve bundle that is carrying his or her pain signals to the brain.

It requires some trial and error and sometimes, Meloy said, the surgeon hurts a patient, who will groan or cry out. At first he thought this had happened with this patient. She made a "different" sound.

"But the sound that she made was a little bit different. I asked her what it was,'' he said. That was when she recommended he teach her husband the technique.

"The next day in the operating room, the nurses were all asking me how one gets that,'' Meloy deadpanned.

Meloy said he repositioned the electrode and was able to help the patient's pain. ``We able to reduce her narcotics usage by about a half,'' he said.

He was not able to offer her a dual use of the pacemaker-sized device, which is implanted under the skin.

The device works not to block pain but to change the way the patient perceives it. ``Instead of feeling pain, they feel what most people describe as a buzzing sensation in the affected area,'' Meloy said.

"It's not so much a distraction as a change in perception. You are altering what they feel.''

This seemed to work the same way in pushing the a patient's orgasm button. "Yes, she literally got a buzz,'' Meloy sighed. ``Yes, we turned her on. The puns can go on and on.''

But he hopes to turn this to a serious use.

"Once you get past the giggles and smirks, as far as orgasmic dysfunction goes, it is a very real problem. People don't like to talk about it. But if we are going to utilize a device like this, it would be to allow people to have more of a normal life than some sort of supernormal life.''

In other words, no "Orgasmatron'' as featured in the 1973 Woody Allen movie Sleeper.'

Meloy hopes he could develop the device for temporary use, to retrain a patient's sexual response. ``You could just get them back in the groove or whatever.'' Then the device could be used outside the body via a catheter.

But Meloy stressed it was no toy.

"Even for pain management patients we certainly exhaust all other possibilities before we start utilizing this type of technique,'' he said.

Will it work on all kinds of people, men as well as women? "I observed it twice,'' Meloy said. "I hang out with other people who do pain management, and I have heard of it working with men as well,'' he said.

"Is it reproducible? I sure hope so.''

Sexual Secrets
one of the most popular Tantra books, is no out in a new expanded edition in full color. There is also a TV miniseries "The Look of Love" in which Nik Douglas plays a part. Nik says it may have, he hopes, some good material on Tantra. Nik and Penny Slinger are the co-authors of the original Sexual Secrets, the best-selling book on Tantra, now published in many languages. Nik says there's another book now in progress. Also, look for some of his words in the Nepal Institute Website soon...

FDA Approves Clitoral Vacuum
T
he FDA just approved a clitoral vacuum  for sale in the United States. Actually, pump is probably a better term, but vacuum is how it has been referred to  in most of the press.

No, this device is not designed to pick up dust bunnies and lint, but rather to suck blood into the clitoris. Similar in theory to vacuum erection devices, UroMetrics Inc.'s $359 Eros Clitoral Therapy Device (Eros-CTD) consists of a small suction cup attached to a battery operated vacuum. The idea is that you place this cup on your clitoris, switch on the vacuum... er, pump, and leave it in place for a few minutes until your clitoris feels engorged.

I know the general public is going to scoff at such a silly-sounding device (and there will be endless Tonight Show monologues and Top Ten Lists) but as a trained professional and sex therapist... I am going to scoff at this too. Look, there is no doubt that there is a tremendous amount of sexual dysfunction in both men and women and I am glad that we are starting to take women's sexual complaints more seriously, but a clitoral vacuum? The disorder this device is intended to treat is female sexual arousal disorder. In most women, this disorder is related to a lack of desire for sex and an inability to enjoy sexual relations (often because of partner problems). The last thing these women need is for their partner to say is "Okay honey, I'm ready for some some love; turn on your vacuum and let's get to it!"

Although this device is being touted as women finally getting their own Viagra, I see it quite differently. It is most akin to penile pumps prescribed for men who are unable to get an erection. However, in no way does anyone pretend that those pumps suddenly increase desire or arousal, they simply make a man able to have intercourse -- it is strictly a "bring your own desire" product. Although I am sure there are some cases in which this new prescription-only device can be helpful (certain post-menopausal women, for example), most of the women I see who are having problems with arousal and orgasm would do far better to learn how to please themselves then teach their partners how they like to be pleasured. The sort of reductionist approach to sexuality advocated by the makers of this pump could only have been wrought by medical researchers who look at arousal as a simple hydraulic process. Not to sound like a Luddite, but let's keep sex more than something you activate with a vacuum.

Wall Street Journal Does
Front Page Story on Tantra

America's largest circulation newspaper, the Wall Street Journal on December 7, 1998, did a front page, (and 1/2 page spillover!) on Tantra, with the headline: "Naked Ambition" Subheads "Tantra May Be Old, But It Has Generated A Hot Modern Market," and "Ancient Hindu Sex Practice Gets New-Age Makeover; Competition Is Fierce," and finally, "How Joe Became a Swami."
Mentioned in the story were Charles and Caroline Muir, Osho, Swami Virato, Margot Anand and others. The slant of the story was tongue-in-cheek financial. But it did place Tantra in the minds of those who most need it--up-tight corporate America! Over 5 million people are said to have seen this story!
